Do you want to find more work and life balance?

Ask yourself these questions and see if there are simple changes you can make…

Priorities:

  • Have you evaluated your personal needs and talents?  Have you made work decisions based on these talents and the best way to use them to support your family and contribute to society?
  • Have your family’s needs changed in the last 3-5 years?  If so, have you adjusted your work schedule or work approach to accommodate these needs?

Set clear priorities based on fundamental personal commitments.

Choice:

  • Have you chosen a profession or an employer that allows for flexibility or change throughout the career?
  • Have you chosen your work because it is the best “fit” for your family at this life stage?

Make responsible choices based on these priorities—choices of how, where, when and why to pursue your work goals.

Communication:

  • Have you discussed and agreed to each career or significant work decision in partnership with your spouse?
  • Have you communicated current priorities and choices with your manager or team members in the workplace?

Communicate these choices in appropriate ways-to spouse, family members and in the workplace.

Structure:

  • Have you made a conscious choice of where to work based on the impact of travel on your daily schedule?
  • Have you considered a flexible work schedule to accommodate your family’s needs?
  • Does your professional competence prepare you for greater flexibility?

Create a working structure that best fits your priorities and choices-this "structure" may require alternative work schedules, greater flexibility, or other "non-traditional" options.

Attention:

  • Are you frequently distracted with obligations outside of your current focus?  Do you frequently worry about family issues when you are at work or worry about work issues when you are with your family?
  • Are there any personal habits or management practices that you can use to help you focus on the priorities that you have established and communicated?

When you have made these choices based on reflection and communication, place your attention where you are "in the moment" whether it be at work or with the family.

Reflection:

  • Do you regularly reflect on the integration of your work and family commitments?
  • Do you readjust your work schedule—increasing or decreasing your work commitments—based on natural changes in family life or the needs of your family circumstances?

Continue to reflect and reassess your situation based on your personal and family needs and natural stages in life.
